The association of companies in the ICT sector (RESTIC) has lodged a complaint against TikTok for failing to comply with personal data legislation regarding children and minors. In an interview with Radio France Internationale, Moustapha Diakhaté, Executive Secretary General of RESTIC, explained that the development of TikTok in Senegal, a fast-growing market, was worrying. For RESTIC, the problematic content includes violent, sexual or obscene content, or content that is simply “banned by our habits and customs here in Senegal and in Africa”.
Diakhaté pointed out that TikTok was far from being the only social network to collect data on African users, but that it was the fastest growing. RESTIC hopes that TikTok will clarify its data storage mechanisms and that the Senegalese authorities will be given access to ensure the data is not used for purposes other than those for which it was originally collected.
