Senegal: Brioche Dorée’s application for authorisation of a biometric system based on facial recognition is rejected

In the first quater of 2023 ? Senegal’s personal data protection commission (CDP) has decided to refuse Brioche Dorée’s, a fast food company, a request for authorisation to use a biometric system based on facial recognition, for the purposes of controlling the attendance, entry and exit of its employees.

The CDP took the view that such a system, which collects facial data, was excessive in relation to the purposes of securing premises, monitoring attendance and controlling the entry and exit of employees.

The Data Protection Authority therefore asked Brioche Dorée to set up a less intrusive system for monitoring employees’ attendance times and entries and exits, in particular by using a digital clocking-in and clocking-out system.
